Early career
Jay was drafted per Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd spherical of the 1984 amateur draft and was traded shortly thenceforth to the New York Yankees. He manufactured his Major League debut in September 11, 1987, appearing in 7 games that season. Jay was traded once again a next summertime, in July 21, 1988, to the Seattle Mariners along with deuce career minor leaguers (Rich Balabon & Troy Evers) around exchange for Ken Phelps. A trade is typically considered one of a worst manufactured per Yankees of that time, & a right inside Mariner history. (This fact was another time noted humorously on the television program Seinfeld, in which a Yankees' creator, George Steinbrenner, appears at the front yard of George Costanza's parents to inform them – erroneously – that their boy is dead. All Mr. Costanza can say is, "What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year!" A clip was played at Safeco Field when Buhner was inducted into the Jack-tar' Hall of Fame around 2004).

Best years
Jay hit his stride within 1991, hitting 27 HRs with 77 RBIs. Patch easily-known for his tendency to strike retired, Jay as well developed the patience at the shell which allowed him to hike Hundred days within a year in many occasions.
